The first time that Ewan McGregor and Mary Elizabeth Winstead shot a scene together, they were in a bathtub, mostly naked. McGregor, in a maximally unflattering wig, was sticking his gut out as far as it would go. This was on a recent afternoon in the chilly basement of a midtown hotel where McGregor and Winstead perched on a love seat, his jacket over his shoulders, his hand on her knee. Two years later, in 2019, they filmed “Birds of Prey” but did not share scenes. Now, they have reunited onscreen for “A Gentleman in Moscow,” which premiered Friday on Paramount+ and debuts Sunday on Showtime.

TABLE FOR TWO: Fictions, by Amor TowlesFew literary stylists not named Ann Patchett attain best-sellerdom, but Amor Towles makes the cut. His three lauded novels — “Rules of Civility,” “A Gentleman in Moscow” and “The Lincoln Highway” — hung around on lists for months, if not years. The book spans the 20th century, bringing characters from a range of backgrounds into tableaus of deceit and desire. Towles devotes the first section to New York, its wealthy and famous shuffling against strivers and innocents in La Guardia terminals, musty bookstores or immigrant communities. In “The Line,” a naïve Communist builds a lucrative business that steers him to Manhattan, where con games lurk on every corner.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Women lead the major categories at the Grammys this year – names like SZA, Taylor Swift, Victoria Monét, Phoebe Bridgers, Olivia Rodrigo and Brandy Clark top the list. If Taylor Swift wins for “Midnights,” she will become the first artist in Grammy history to win the top prize four times. (And, conversely, artists it loves to nominate but not award: both Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus have yet to receive a Grammy. I'd love to see a Cyrus win, but I’ve been burned before! She’s tied with the likes of Taylor Swift and Miley Cyrus with six nominations, and I think it is her time to finally take home a trophy.

A pipeline that moves methane gas from the Frank R. Bowerman landfill to an onsite power plant is shown in Irvine, California, California, U.S., June 15, 2021. The philanthropies, which include the Bezos Earth Fund, Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Sequoia Climate Foundation, will help accelerate the phase-down of methane emissions and other non-carbon dioxide greenhouse gases. That means that reining in methane emissions can have a more immediate impact in limiting climate change. Research firm Kayrros, which tracks methane emissions, said on Friday that despite the pledge, emissions of methane are not coming down, and in some places, they are even going up. Rapid cuts in methane emissions from fossil fuels could lead to a reduction of 0.1°C in global temperature rise by mid-century," said Antoine Rostand, CEO of Kayrros.

She left her husband for the shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, largely giving up performing in the process. When Onassis eventually married Jackie Kennedy instead, Callas was alone and bereft, without either the vocation that had given her purpose or the man who had replaced it. There was always that sense of every phrase being considered, without feeling studied — of a voice with a purpose. But among the most pernicious stereotypes about Callas is that she was an actress who could barely sing, who got by on charisma alone. Listen to her tender “O mio babbino caro.” Listen to her delicate yet commanding “D’amor sull’ali rosee.” She was always a bel canto singer at heart.

The novelist Amor Towles, whose best-selling books include “Rules of Civility,” “A Gentleman in Moscow” and “The Lincoln Highway,” contributed an essay to the Book Review recently in which he discussed the evolving role the cadaver has played in detective fiction and what it says about the genre’s writers and readers. Towles visits the podcast this week to chat with the host Gilbert Cruz about that essay, as well as his path to becoming a novelist after an early career in finance. “I remember finishing ‘Rules of Civility’ and feeling like … I don’t know if it’s going to be popular, I don’t know if it’s going to sell, but this is what I wanted to do,” Towles tells Cruz. “It was a great sort of renewal of confidence that I had as a younger person of, yeah, I can do this. And I would have gone on and on and on, I would have written books that nobody read, you know, until I died, I think quite happily.

All Hail the Long-Suffering Cadaver

For over 100 years the cadaver, that unsung hero of murder mysteries, has been accommodating, gracious and generally on time. But through it all, the cadaver has shown up without complaint to do its job. But decade in and decade out, the cadaver has remembered its lines and hit its mark. And all of this — the loss of life, the autopsies, the recriminations — the cadaver has suffered in silence, on our behalf. After all, it was the cadaver who set the wheels of a mystery in motion.

May 8 (Reuters) - River Plate's Agustin Palavecino and Boca Juniors' Marcos Rojo and Luis Vazquez are under investigation by Buenos Aires prosecutors, Argentine media reported, following a fiery brawl that led to seven red cards in River's 1-0 win in the Argentine derby on Sunday. River Plate president Jorge Brito said he did not like the way the match ended despite their victory, and that both teams made mistakes that triggered the brawl. Under Argentine law, Rojo could be sanctioned with one to five days of community service or a fine of 200 to 2000 Argentine pesos ($0.87 to $8.79). Palavecino and Vazquez could face fines of 10,000 to 50,000 Argentine pesos or five to 30 days' detention. For assistance, Rubin turned to ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence chatbot that's gone viral since its launch late last year. Rubin asked ChatGPT to "generate 5 insanely clever and catchy headlines" for an infographic promoting his vacuum cleaner hose. A stream of YouTube videos, articles and LinkedIn posts have appeared in recent months touting the benefits of ChatGPT for Amazon sellers. Rubin said he plans to incorporate ChatGPT into a new tool that will help sellers quickly fine-tune their product listings.

Social media has, meanwhile, filled with accounts by darker-skinned people in Tunisia, including migrants with and without valid visas, African students and Black Tunisians, of ill treatment and fear. Official figures say there are 21,000 migrants from sub-Saharan African countries in Tunisia. Tunisia introduced visa-free travel for many African countries over the past decade. Many migrants in Tunisia aim to cross illegally to Europe but cannot afford the hundreds of dollars to get to Italy - a journey also taken by growing numbers of Tunisians.
A six-party opposition alliance has yet to agree their presidential candidate, and Imamoglu has been mooted as a possible leading challenger to run against Erdogan. 'VERY SAD DAY'[1/5] Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu and his wife Dilek sit at his office as a Turkish court sentenced Imamoglu, a popular rival of President Tayyip Erdogan, to more than two years in prison and imposed a political ban for insulting public officials, in Istanbul, Turkey, December 14, 2022. A jail sentence or political ban on Imamoglu would need to be upheld in appeals courts, potentially extending an outcome to the case beyond the elections date. "The ruling will be final only after the higher court decides whether to uphold the ruling or not. Under these circumstances, it would be wrong to say that the political ban is in place," Timucin Koprulu, professor of criminal law at Atilim University in Ankara, told Reuters after the ruling.
The Congressional Hispanic Caucus on Monday nominated dozens of Latino musicians to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in an effort to increase Latino representation. "Latinos are nearly 20% of the US and widely bilingual — but of the 600 titles in the Recording Registry, less than 4% are from Latino artists," Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, wrote on Twitter. “I want for the contributions of our musicians to be recognized and celebrated in the way that they deserve, because they have made a mark in America,” Castro told Axios in an interview. The National Recording Registry at the Library of Congress chooses 25 recordings each year to showcase the range and diversity of American recorded sound and to increase preservation awareness for future generations. Since the deadline for public nominations for the 2023 registry has passed, the National Recording Preservation Board will work with Castro to consider nominations, Steve Leggett, the board's program director, told Axios.

‘Quietude’ by Eliane Elias Review: Beachy Bossa Nova

At the bossa nova’s start in the late 1950s, the music was composed largely by male Brazilian sensualists. Not surprisingly, as the bossa nova caught on, it was popularized on Brazilian albums and TV by a growing number of female vocalists. Elizete Cardoso recorded “Canção do Amor Demais ,” widely considered the first bossa nova album, in 1958. A string of Brazilian female singers followed in the early 1960s, including Sylvia Telles , Nara Leão and Elis Regina . But it was Astrud Gilberto ’s single of “The Girl From Ipanema,” released in 1964, that transformed the bossa nova into a global sensation.
